This project is the last one for construction and technology this semester. again, it's a group project. This time we have to choose one site and do some research and analysis based on the chosen site. The site must be two-story building, preferably the one that still under construction. But it's quiet difficult to find one, so we decided to use one of our froup member's house. My group members are Aisyah, Iman, Patrick, Risca, and me; and since four of us don't own a house (as in we rent a room) so we used Aisyah's house which is located in Putra Heights.

There are two things that we need to do for this project; first is for the group marking. we need to do research and make an A2 infographic board that consist of the general information of the site and building system then present it to the class on 30 November. The other one is for individual project, each member has to pick at least one element to be identified more spesicfically. I chose to do more research on openings, which are door and windows. I chose one type for both window and door. At first I thought openings are easy, but then I realized it's a mistake to think like that, now I'm having hard time studying them. But hopefully I can get a lot of knowledge from this exploration and be able to present it to class.

The first one is an awning window.

This window is located on the first floor, specifically in the living room area facing outside. Awning windows are windows that are hinged at the top, the sash swings outward from the bottom. The screen are on the inside of the window, where they are more protected from the elements. advantages of choosing this type of window:

  • since awning windows open out from the top, they provide protection from the rain when opened. They will allow little to no leakage from rain when open.

  • awnings can be installed higher up than many types of windows, meaning they can provide natural light and ventilation without compromising privacy.

  • awning windows can help give a home a stylish, contemporary look that stands out from traditional window styles.

aside from the benefits, choosing this type of window also have some disadvantages:

  • If an awning window sits overlooking sidewalks, decks, porches, or terraces, someone can easily collide with the windows’ jutting sashes. (applies to single awning window)

  • requires frequent washing. open sashes on awning windows are exposed. the open sashes slant as well, so they can become dirty easily and faster than other types of windows.

  • screens and storm windows are mounted on the inside of awning windows; this could make a fast escape difficult in case of a fire or other dangerous situation. however, the construction of awning windows makes entry quite difficult as well.

the material of the frame is mahogany wood which is pretty expensive. but it gives the house a very eye catching look and a stunning appearance. also wooden frame is much more enviroment friendly because they actually come with a negative GWP (global warming potential) which implies that over their long period of service they are capable of reducing the Co2 amount from the atmosphere.

The cost of awning windows depends on factors such as the material, size, and manufacturer. Because costs vary based on these and other factors, a top-of-the-line awing window may cost anywhere from $350 on the low end up to $1,050 or more on the high end. Steel and wood are the most expensive materials for awning windows, while aluminum, cellular PVC, composite, fiberglass, and vinyl are the least expensive.
