Community Service Initiative - Week 12
this week marks the end of the journey of this module. It has been a long roller coaster ride throughout the whole semester. After the execution day on last Saturday by some students, and after all of the hard work from everyone that was involved in this project, this week we finally launched our mini library for the new mini library!
On Saturday, 22nd June 2019, we decided to meet up at Serendah around 10AM as we had a lot of things to settle and prepare before the kids come. Me and other two classmates decided to carpool together and go from Taylor's University. The reason was that at the location there were only limited parking areas so the lesser cars the better for us as well.
But before we head up to the location which is in Serendah, we needed to stop by in campus for a while in order to pick up and gather some of the remaining stuffs which are the donated stationeries. By the time we were done packing up the stuffs, the car was really full as we had several big containers and plastic bags. It took us more or less one hour to reach the location, and there was no traffic so there wasn’t any problem getting there. Since I didn’t join on the execution day, this was my first time to come to the site. It was surrounded by nature, and the mini library was easy to spot. After we parked, we unloaded our stuffs and put them inside the mini library as the others already started setting up the area, such as balloons for decorations, the banner, setting up the projector and sound system, arranging the carpers and bean bags, setting up tables and chairs, preparing the food, and a bit of cleaning.
Me and Risca were arranging the stationeries such as crayons, markers, paint, pin board, etc on the tables and cabinets that were provided. Some of the stationeries we wrapped using ribbon since we have spare ribbon and to make them look attractive as well.
After some of the preparation done, it was around 12pm and the event was supposed to start at 2pm so we took a break first, while waiting for the lecturers, VIPs, and the kids to come. Around this time actually some kids came to visit out of curiosity, as they look surprised and excited when they saw the mini library.
After everyone arrived, Jordan from the sponsorship group played the role as an MC and led the kids to sing and dance to several songs. The kids were happy to join and sing along. Some students also decided to sing the ABC songs and teach the kids alphabet in English.
By that time, it was the time for the main event to start. First it was the speech from our lecturers and project manager, and continued by speech and appreciation by the representative of Yayasan Salam. The event was followed by the official opening ceremony of the mini library by cutting the ribbon in front of the entrance.
As the main event came to end, we proceed to have lunch as everyone was already hungry. The stationery team gave out goodies to the kids at that time, and by that it was time to say goodbye. We took a group photo and everyone from Yayasan Salam went home. We from Taylor’s university stayed back to clean up and briefing by the lecturer to proceed on the next assignment.
